Delwin McCowan had experience operating heavy equipment before deciding to come to National Heavy Equipment Operators School. Delwin wanted to become certified as a heavy equipment operator. Certifications are extremely difficult to obtain without formal training. Delwin was not fond of the home study course that prepared him for resident training. He decided on heavy equipment as a career mostly because his former profession was not diverse enough. Being a heavy equipment operator allows him to use different machines, perform different tasks, and meet new people.

Gaffney South Carolina is home to a Mr. Mack Norman. Mack used to operate computers. Mack gave up two things to be a computer operator. He gave up any hope of ever working outdoors; and he gave up a childhood dream. Playing in the dirt with dirt with toy trucks and tractors is almost a right of passage from boyhood to adolescence. For some, that boyhood playtime event plants a seed. That seed laid dormant in Mack for many years.

Today, nearly 60% of women age 16 and over participate in the workforce. While women have made some gains in occupations traditionally occupied by men, construction trades remain overwhelmingly male dominated. In 1970, when OSHA was enacted, women made up less than one percent of workers in the construction trades. By 2000 that percentage had only grown to 2.5 percent. The construction industry as a whole is facing a nationwide crisis with respect to the availability of qualified labor. With the demand for labor outstripping supply, construction employers need to expand their recruitment efforts to previously untapped labor sources, including women. Please meet one such woman. Pictured here is Orpria Lawrence.

Friends, this is Jay Squier and he’s from Palm Bay Florida. Jay was a successful Rout Mount Operator with a circuit board manufacturer. After nine years of devoted employment there, he was laid off, permanently. Jay was able to secure a grant from the Federal Government for jobs training. National Heavy Equipment Operators School came highly recommended.

Jay diligently completed his distance learning courses and arrived at Green Cove Springs in April of 2003. He trained on the earthmoving equipment most encountered on a construction job site. He especially was skilled at the back-hoe. The most difficult part of the training for Jay was being away from his family. Our crack staff of instructors was not able to help with that too much.

Tragedy befalls all of us at some point in our lives. How we deal with what life hands us defines who we are. Ray Crossland did quite well installing tile for a source of revenue. He was very good at it and had no desire to change careers. Unfortunately a fateful day changed all that. Ray was involved in a car accident that injured his knees and back. Tile setters need their knees and back and Ray could no longer do the job with his injuries.

The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Ashland Ohio. Pictured here, on his very own Case 850 dozer, is John McConnell. John completed our Heavy Equipment Operators training back in November 2003. He has since gone on to greatness. Specifically, John is now the owner/operator of his own land clearing business. Besides the Case bulldozer, he also owns a John Deere 480E, and a Ford 4400 Loader.

James was not always attracted to the construction industry and heavy equipment. He actually spent some time in the US Air Force. During his time serving he worked on military aircraft. It wasn’t until the end of his active duty service did he realize he wanted to do something else.

James Burrough is the embodiment of the American Dream. The reason for this statement will become self-evident. James has always loved heavy equipment. He played with toy loaders, dump trucks, and dozers as a young boy. As he grew older and became old enough to work, he, of course, chose heavy equipment. James toiled for years as an apprentice for a company that installed septic systems. It may not sound glamorous, but he learned his lessons well. As an apprentice, James mastered the backhoe and learned a thing or two about running a small business. He saved his money and enrolled in National Heavy Equipment Operators School. He was initially interviewed by Frank DeMarco from National’s Admissions Department. Frank screens applicants to insure quality students come to the school. After the interview, Frank highly recommended James. While at National, he perfected his backhoe skills and was introduced to dozers, excavators, loaders, and minis. The time he spent away from his home in Alabama turned out to be well worth the sacrifice.
