When we were kids life was simple. Little boys played in the dirt and little girls played dolls or house. Now a days, it’s quite possible to offend someone by drawing those conclusions. In this politically correct climate, we must always remember to never infer a stereotypical statement toward any one religious group, gender, or ethnicity. One thing that is true and not offensive in the least is that Robert Waters enjoyed playing in the dirt as a kid, and he gets paid for doing it now. His mother doesn’t yell at him for getting dirty either.

Robert is now a highly qualified, well paid bull dozer operator for the VFL Technology Corporation. VFL is located here in Florida. Besides the dozer, Robert also is adept at operating the Volvo Rear Dump 40C, CAT Rear Dump, and the John Deere Loader.

Before it became impossible for Robert to resist his childhood calling to heavy equipment, Robert had his own business. He ran a successful pressure washing company, specializing in homes. Robert discovered however, that “if the boss doesn’t work, the boss doesn’t eat.” Robert also tried being a gas station manager (long hours, low pay, poor benefits), wine salesman (commission only), and a repossessor (dangerous work).

Robert is married with a 17 year old son. His wife April, works in the Volusia County school board and his son, Wayne attends Pine Ridge High School. Robert shared that the most difficult part of the training during his stay with us was being separated from his family. Now that he enjoys stable, rewarding employment, he never has to be separated again if he chooses not too. The construction industry is woefully understaffed for equipment operators.

Robert plans to improve his skill set on the equipment he trained on as well as learn new equipment. He ultimately wants to gain enough field experience to become marketable in the Caribbean. Being that fishing and gardening are two of Roberts favorite pastimes, the Caribbean is a perfect place for both.

We wish Robert and his family great success now and in the future. We are grateful that we could help him turn his boyhood dream of playing in the dirt and getting well paid for doing so into a reality.

Robert is National Heavy Equipment Operators School’s overwhelming choice National Heavy Equipment Operator School Featured Graduate.
